Home improvement can be a great endeavor to begin, no matter how much knowledge
or skill you have associated with it. Don't be fooled by home improvement shows
that are on T.V. There is more to home improvement than really big jobs. Read
through these tips to see the fun that can be had with this endeavor.
Inspect your fencing regularly for tears and places where it may have come loose
in a storm. This is particularly important if you have young children and pets.
Remember, fencing works two ways. It works to keep your children and pets in
your yard and it works to keep other people's children and pets out of your
yard!
Hose down your home on the outside using a pressure washer and detergents made
specifically for your siding. Pressure washers can be rented quite economically
and they do wonders in cleaning the girt off the outside of your home. Be
careful around the roof line and windows. You don't want to knock anything
loose!
Clean or replace the filters on your home's heating and cooling system. Dirty
filters make the system less efficient. Often filter cleaning or replacement is
a very easy job that can be performed by the homeowner. Even if you have to hire
a professional, you likely recoup the costs relatively quickly.
Winterize your home's foundation! Take the time in the fall to go around the
foundation of your house and identify any cracks that need sealing up. Big
cracks might require big interventions to address but often smaller cracks can
be sealed using expanding foam. The money you will save in heat costs will more
than make up for any inconvenience!
Instead of adding on to your home to get an extra room, consider using the space
that you already have. It is cheaper to add a wall than to add a whole room. If
you have some space in your home that is not being frequently used, consider
adding a wall to make it into a room that will be used often, such as a bedroom
or office.
Did your contractor mention that you have 10 days after signing his contract to
"cool off" and cancel if you wish? If not, I'd really question whether or not
the contractor has your best interests in mind. It is his legal responsibility
to ensure you know all facets of the contract, including that one.
Consider the value that you are adding to the home through home improvement
projects. You want to make sure that what you add to the home or change in the
home is going to present an investment that pays off if you sell the home. You
want to add value to the home, not take it away.
As was previously stated, home improvement can be a great endeavor for nearly
anyone to start. It takes a little knowledge to learn the basics so that you can
start improving correctly, but you don't have to become a pro if you don't want
to. Just keep those tips in mind and start improving your home!
